Blender is a FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) program that enables complex modelling and manipulation of 3D objects, as well as their rendering as both still images and animations. Blender also supports importation of discipline specific 3D data structures such as Protein DataBase (PDB) files. Indeed, Blender has deep support for addressing its internal data model using Python, which makes it a powerful tool for importing and visualising arbitrary research data. Blender can also be used as a tool to 'tidy' 3D data before exporting it to a dissemination platform such as Acrobat 3D or a browser-based WebGL viewer.
Our team runs termly courses on the basic functionality of Blender, and we encourage researchers to attend these and discuss their 3D data visualisation needs.
