The IDN currently supports a variety of technologies for creating and designing interactive data visualisations. Broadly, these can be split into two categories of tool:
Point and Click Tools
These tools allow users to build visualisations interactively. For instance, selecting columns from a spreadsheet-like view of your data and clicking "Create BarChart". You might be familiar with the excellent tools for building visualisations in Excel; these
tools have a very similiar feel and are usually very easy to learn.
Many point and click tools require a license or else subscription for web hosting, unless your data is made public. Currently, the IDN has experience in using the following tools:
These tools require users to write code (or scripts) to generate visualisations. In general, scripting is more difficult to start than using point and click tools; however they provide much greater flexibility and extensibility as you may fully
control their behaviour and appearance.
Typically, scripting tools may be used freely but you may require a subscription to publish content to the web. Currently, the IDN has experience in using the following tools:
