Google Drive is an extremely popular file-sharing service and is part of the Google Docs suite It's well known that academics choose to use the free-tier of Google Drive for two purposes:
- Syncing files between devices
- Backing up files (despite it NOT being a backup solution)
- Sharing files with collaborators
- Working on Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and more
It's important to remember Google Drive is not a backup service; deleted files and historical versions of files are only backed up for 25 days, and you cannot "restore your computer" from Google Drive - only raw files. However, Google Drive is a legitimate and powerful tool for syncing files between devices and to collaborate with your research group.
When you're ready to publish your data, please do make a copy of your data from Google Drive into a fully featured data repository.
